This weekend, thousands of people will gather at Clifton Down in Bristol to watch performances from Lorde, Little Simz and Wet Leg. But beneath the headline acts sits something quieter, and possibly more significant: the festival is running almost entirely on renewable power, combining hydrogen fuel cells with mobile batteries charged from sustainable sources.

On the surface, it's a music story. Dig deeper, and it's actually about infrastructure, regional investment and how the places we live are being reimagined for a lower-carbon future.

How one gig sparked a broader movement

The roots of this project stretch back to a homecoming concert by Massive Attack in Bristol. The trip-hop collective was determined to put on a show with the lowest possible carbon footprint, and they largely succeeded. From that proof of concept grew something larger: Act 1.5, a collaborative initiative bringing together artists, technicians and scientists.

What separates this from other well-intentioned sustainability efforts is the money and political backing. The West of England mayoral combined authority provided financial support, whilst Bristol City Council, the Greens-led administration, threw its weight behind the project. Clean energy providers and Bottle Yard, the region's largest television studio, also came on board.

By the summer, this collective effort had powered around a dozen events, from the Bristol Balloon Fiesta to television productions filmed locally, including the drama Mavis Eccleston. But Forwards Festival represents the pinnacle: the first major music event of this scale to run on such infrastructure.

Why this matters beyond the festival field

For property owners and buyers, infrastructure investment of this kind has real consequences. When a region invests in innovative energy systems, it signals something about its future priorities. Bristol isn't unique in facing pressure to decarbonise, but it's rare to see this level of coordinated public and private backing for experimental solutions.

The project is now exploring rollout with other mayoral authorities across England.

John O'Sullivan, another senior figure at Act 1.5, made a telling observation: "The only thing you notice is the quiet." No more noisy diesel generators belching fumes. Instead, hydrogen fuel cells and charged batteries powering stages, lighting and sound systems.

That simplicity masks considerable complexity. But it also represents something important: solutions that work without fanfare. The festival-goers this weekend won't have to think about how their weekend is powered. It just works, cleanly.

The broader lesson is that sustainable infrastructure doesn't require compromise or sacrifice. It requires coordination, investment and willingness to try something untested. For a country grappling with how to hit net-zero targets whilst maintaining liveable communities, Bristol's experiment offers a template. Not perfection, but a practical demonstration that another way is possible.
